Make Your Voice Heard: Help Veterans Receive the Chiropractic Care They Need

Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) have introduced the Chiropractic Care to All Veterans Act. The bill would require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to phase-in the chiropractic benefit at all major VA medical facilities over several years. You, too, can help ensure the essential services provided by doctors of chiropractic are available to the brave men and women who have served our country by simply clicking the link below to urge your senators to cosponsor this bill!

By Donald M. Petersen, Jr. at http://blog.toyourhealth.com/wrblog/

Drugs Increase Elderly Fall Risk

Along with other harmful side effects, many drugs can increase the risk of falling for elderly. Recently published, researchers note that “the results from this study indicate that GPs (general medical practitioners) need to be reminded that there is a connection between FRID (fall-risk-increasing drugs) use and falls among elderly patients of enough clinical relevance to remember to assess the patient’s drug list and perform regular drug reviews.”

Talk to your medical doctor if you (or a loved one) are elderly and at risk of falling. If you are taking any drugs, find out if these are increasing your risk of falling and ask if there are safer, non-drug alternatives.

Yoga for PMS

Premenstrual Syndromes (PMS) includes a wide variety of symptoms that women experience between ovulation and their period. These can include mood swings, irritability, fatigue and depression. Approximately 75% of women have experienced PMS.

A study was conducted to see if yoga exercises could help with PMS symptoms. After dividing subjects into groups, researchers found that “the alpha brain wave percentage was higher immediately after yoga exercise in the PMS group. This suggests that the participants felt more relaxed or were in a more peaceful mental condition after yoga exercise.” They concluded that “women with PMS could attend short-term yoga exercise in the luteal (latter) phase to make themselves feel better and maintain a better attention level.”

Vitamin D Increase Senior Muscles

Retaining muscle strength is very important for older adults. Loss of muscle strength can contribute to lack of mobility, falls and the inability to perform daily tasks.

Researchers have found that “the supplementation of vitamin D alone in postmenopausal women provided significant protective factor against the occurrence of sarcopenia (loss of muscle size and strength due to aging), with significant increases in muscle strength and control of progressive loss of lean mass.”

Be sure you and your loved ones are getting the nutrition they need. Ask your doctor of chiropractic if vitamin D supplements should be considered.

Less Drugs = Healthier Kidneys

Almost everything you consume goes through your kidneys, including any drugs you take. Not surprisingly, drugs can take a toll on the kidney function.

A recent study found that “avoidance of polypharmacy (taking multiple drugs) was associated with an improvement in renal (kidney) function.” As everyone knows, all drugs have side effects. In addition, their concentrated nature can have a negative impact on your kidneys and liver. Never take any drug unless it is absolutely required.

Garlic for Your Immune System

Garlic has long thought to have many health benefits. A comprehensive study looked at how different garlic preparations may benefit immune function and inflammatory disorders. Researchers noted that “in this review, we assess the most recent experimental results, which indicate that garlic appears to enhance the functioning of the immune system by stimulating certain cell types, such as macrophages, lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, dendritic cells, and eosinophils, by mechanisms including modulation of cytokine secretion, immunoglobulin production, phagocytosis, and macrophage activation.”

When Gain Means Pain

The potential health consequences of obesity include diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer, and that's just for starters.

What's worse, even if you manage to avoid those health risks, a recent study suggests life won't be roses if you're carrying significant extra weight. According to research published in the Journal of Pain, obesity is associated with multi-site lower-body joint pain. Specifically, 26.3 percent of obese participants reported joint pain at two sites; and 31.6 percent reported pain at three sites. Only 20 percent of obese participants reported no joint pain.

If you're struggling with your weight, talk to your doctor. As a health care provider, it's their job to help you tackle the issue head on; after all, it's a health issue that can have major consequences. And remember, in the vast majority of cases, proper diet and consistent exercise are fundamental principles to help you achieve a healthy, long-term weight – not medication, surgical procedures or other "quick fixes." Why? Because in general, the latter may address the weight, but they won't address the underlying lifestyle issues that promoted weight gain in the first place.

Note from Dr. Mha Atma:  The number one cause of pain, disease and premature death in the U.S. is food. Doesn't hafta be that way but it is. It isn't necessary to have a perfect diet to be healthier, just a better one. Of course there are many reasons why the average American diet sucks, including poverty, ignorance, capitalistic greed, emotional and cultural attachments, and more. While we struggle with these, we can meanwhile each strive to educate ourselves and decide to take better care of ourselves and our families...

Why Deep Fried Foods May Cause Cancer

by: Michael Greger M.D.

In the latest study on dietary patterns and breast cancer risk among women, healthier eating was associated with eliminating three-quarters of the odds of breast cancer, whereas less healthy eating was associated with up to nearly eight times the odds. Included in the unhealthy eating pattern was the consumption of deep-fried foods, which have previously been linked to breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, oral and throat cancers, esophageal cancer, and cancer of the voicebox. No deep fried foods? What’s a Southern belle to do? Instead of deep fried foods, how about the traditional Southern diet, characterized by high intakes of cooked greens, beans, legumes, cabbage, sweet potatoes and cornbread, which may reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer significantly.

What about the consumption of deep-fried foods and risk of prostate cancer? Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington found that eating French fries, fried chicken, fried fish, and doughnuts was associated with about a third greater odds of prostate cancer. After stratifying for tumor aggressiveness, they found slightly stronger associations with more aggressive disease, suggesting that regular intake of deep-fried foods may contribute to the progression of prostate cancer as well.

What in deep fried foods is so bad for us? Just heating oil that hot can generate potentially carcinogenic compounds, and then known carcinogens such as heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons form when the muscles of chickens and fish are cooked at that temperature. Deep-fried plants, on the other hand, can form acrylamide.
